3-66 Armor
The current 3rd
Battalion 66th Armor "Black Knights"
were activated on 17 March 2008 in Schweinfurt, Germany and assigned
to the 172nd "Blackhawk" Infantry Brigade.
The unit was reflagged from the 1st
Battalion, 77th Armor "Steel Tigers",
2nd “Dagger Brigade”, 1st Infantry Division (Mechanized).
The unit subsequently moved to Grafenwöhr, Germany
in the summer of 2008 as a Task Force (1 Armor / 2
Mech companies) and later deployed for OIF 08-10 and OEF 11-12. In June 2013, the battalion was deactivated along with the 172nd Infantry Brigade.
1-77 Armor
On 5 April 1996, 1st Battalion,
77th Armor "Steel Tigers" were activated
in Schweinfurt, Germany and assigned to the 2nd “Dagger
Brigade” 1st Infantry Division (Mechanized). The
unit was reflagged from the 2nd
Battalion, 64th Armor "Rogue", 1st "Raider
Brigade", 3rd Infantry Division. The unit was sationed
in Schweinfurt, Germany for 12 years and deployed to
Bosnia, elements in I/SFOR 1A in 1996 and 1B in 1997;
Kosovo for 1A in 1999 and 4A in 2002, OIF II in 2004
and OIF 06-08 in 2006.
2-64 Armor
The 2nd Battalion, 64th
Armor "Rogue" moved to Germany as part
of the 1st "Raider Brigade" 3rd Infantry Division
to preserve freedom’s frontier in the Federal
Republic of Germany on 3 April 1963. The 2nd Battalion,
64th Armor was born at this time, and its three sister
battalions 1-64, 3-64, and 4-64 Armor under the Combined
Arms Regimental System following the Korean War; where
the 64th Heavy Tank Battalion was reorganized as the
64th Armor Regiment. 2-64 Armor was the second armor
unit in the United States Army to receive the M-1 Abrams
Main Battle Tank in the spring of 1982. The unit was
stationed in Schweinfurt, Germany for 33 years and participated
in many REFORGERs (Return of Forces to Germany) and
Winter Warriors across the German countryside. The battalion
deployed 4 tank platoons during Desert Shield / Storm and supplemented
the 2nd and 11th ACRs often with border missions along the East-West
German border.
